Prioritizing Animal welfare

is not just something we do, but is ingrained into

who we are

as a company.

Breeders

Beginning with our breeder department, we raise pullets, or young hens, at our pullet barns until they reach maturity. We then move these mature hens to our layer barns, where they produce fertile eggs for our hatchery. These eggs will hatch into our broiler chickens that will spend about 6 weeks in our broiler barns before being taken to our processing plant.

Animal Welfare

To ensure we are maintaining optimal animal welfare standards, both third-party audits and internal audits are conducted annually. Our chickens have constant access to fresh, clean water and high-quality feed made at our local feed mills. They are also required to be provided with natural daylight and receive at least six hours of continuous darkness. In this environment, and with ample space in our barns that contain at least two types of environmental enrichments, they are able to express their natural behaviors of climbing, hiding, perching, dust bathing, and foraging.

To ensure we are maintaining our optimum animal welfare standards, third party audits and internal audits are conducted yearly. Flock assessments that review health standards like quality of feet, cleanliness of feathers, and dryness of litter are conducted by our team members for every flock.

Located in northern Indiana and southern Michigan, we work with roughly 180 broiler farm families and 275 broiler barns. 80% of our farm families are of the Amish faith. Our farm families are responsible for caring for the chickens daily. They walk the barns to check the flock’s health and ensure they have constant access to feed and water. The families work closely with our broiler technicians to provide the chickens with the best possible care.

1/3 of our broiler barns

are certified organic, requiring outdoor access to be permitted following day 28 of a chicken's life.
